Logan Henderson gets the ball for Milwaukee looking to keep the Brewers' best-in-baseball second-half run rolling, and he's picked a good time to be one of the sport's better stories. The 24-year-old is 4-1 with a 3.05 ERA and has won 4 of his last 5 starts, none shorter than 5.0 innings. He'll match up with Landen Roupp, who's quietly been sharper than his 7-8 record suggests, first pitch set for 6:45 PM PT at Oracle Park.

The Brewers' price crept from -134 to -149 leading into first pitch, and that kind of steam on baseball's hottest team makes sense — Henderson's been arguably their best story of the second half. San Francisco just won the opener, but that was more one big swing than a sign this offense has turned a corner. Milwaukee's the play even at the shorter number.

Roupp didn't even get a decision his last time out against Kansas City despite going 6 strong innings with 7 strikeouts and just 2 earned runs allowed — the Giants simply didn't score enough behind him. That's been the story of San Francisco's season more than any one collapse: they've had stretches of solid pitching undercut by a lineup that can't cash in, and Monday's 3-0 win over the Brewers, powered by Grant McCray's first homer in almost 2 years and a strong Tyler Mahle outing, was a rare exception.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, has bigger problems than one series. The Brewers are sitting on a 6-game lead in the NL Central and are widely expected to be buyers before the trade deadline, but their pitching depth has taken real hits — Brandon Woodruff is done for the season after shoulder surgery, Quinn Priester is out long-term, and Kyle Harrison is working his way back from a forearm issue. None of that changes who's on the mound Tuesday, but it's part of why the front office is shopping for arms instead of standing pat.

Sal Frelick's shoulder situation is the other lingering issue for Milwaukee. He's been given a cortisone shot and remains without a firm return date, which thins out an outfield picture that was already dealing with Brandon Lockridge on a rehab assignment. It hasn't stopped the Brewers from playing like the best team in the sport since June 1, but it's a real crack in a roster this good.

San Francisco's issues run deeper and longer. Casey Schmitt left Monday's game with an apparent lower-body injury, Jung Hoo Lee is day-to-day and sat out the opener, and Matt Chapman still has no target return date from the 10-day IL. Add in a farm system light on immediate difference-makers and a front office widely expected to sell over the next few days, and it's easy to see why Tuesday reads more like Milwaukee trying not to slip than a genuine coin-flip matchup.

None of that guarantees anything — the Giants just proved Monday that a good start and one big swing can beat anybody, even the hottest team in baseball. But with Henderson dealing and Milwaukee's lineup capable of erasing one bad night in a hurry, San Francisco's margin for error here is thin.
