Sunday's series finale at Dodger Stadium (1:10 PM PT) doubled as an odd kind of reunion. Logan Henderson (6-2, 2.70 ERA) took the ball against Tarik Skubal (7-6, 2.85 ERA) — the same pitcher Milwaukee tried hard to land at the trade deadline, reportedly dangling top prospect Luis Peña, before Detroit shipped him to LA instead. Henderson was the piece the Brewers wouldn't part with to get him.

Milwaukee took the field without Brice Turang, held out of the lineup with a knee issue, while the Dodgers made a subtraction of their own official hours before first pitch, placing left-hander Justin Wrobleski on the 15-day injured list with forearm inflammation. That's one more arm off an already thin pitching staff, and it's the kind of late-breaking news a posted number doesn't always catch up to in time.

None of it ended up mattering once the game actually started. Henderson did what he's done most of the year — he simply didn't let the Dodgers do much of anything — and LA's only clean run came off a solo shot.

Max Muncy's 4th-inning homer, his 24th of the season, was the only Dodgers run through 9 that didn't come with an asterisk attached. Their other run showed up in the 9th off their own mistakes — Tommy Edman and Kyle Tucker each botched a play late, part of 2 costly Dodgers errors on the day. Jake Bauers, on the other side, went 4-for-4 to help Milwaukee cash in.

Skubal actually held up his end, working 6 innings with 7 strikeouts in his first outing north of 100 pitches since coming back from elbow surgery. It was the bullpen that let him down — Edgardo Henriquez and Alex Vesia combined to give up the late insurance runs, and Aaron Ashby slammed the door for Milwaukee to seal it.

The loss clinched the season series for Milwaukee, part of a stretch that has the Brewers sitting on the best record in the sport. The Dodgers still have plenty of season left to sort this out, but afternoons like this one are exactly why the front office went and got a two-time Cy Young winner in the first place.

Both rosters are banged up well beyond the two names on the mound Sunday. Milwaukee is already down three relievers to injury, and the Dodgers keep adding to their own list. Neither team was at full strength, and for nine innings, it showed.
