Milwaukee rolls into Thursday's series finale still owning the best record in baseball, but Wednesday's 5-1 loss was the first hiccup in what had been a dominant week in St. Louis. Kyle Harrison (8-2, 3.01 ERA) gets the ball again on regular rest after a shaky last outing, while Michael McGreevy (4-7, 3.01 ERA) tries to build off the best start of his season for the Cardinals.

Missed — the Brewers were shut down 1-5, the bear case (Woodruff's absence, a Cardinals team that had already beaten them once) played out.

Pregame

Milwaukee opened this game as the moneyline pick and it just didn't hit — the Brewers came in red-hot but ran into a Cardinals offense and a McGreevy start that clicked at exactly the wrong time. The price still reflected a team with the better roster and rotation depth on paper, even accounting for the Woodruff loss, and one cold night doesn't change that read for a team still running away with its division.

The story in this series has been Milwaukee's rotation getting thinner by the day. Brandon Woodruff is now dealing with a new injury to his right anterior shoulder capsule, a gut punch for a Brewers staff that just watched him post a sub-3.00 ERA before landing back on the shelf. The silver lining: Logan Henderson, who'd been out since late May with a back strain, is set to return to the rotation for Thursday's series finale, giving Milwaukee a much-needed healthy arm as the All-Star break approaches.

St. Louis, meanwhile, had dropped four straight before Wednesday, getting outscored badly across the doubleheader sweep the day before. McGreevy allowing just 2 earned runs over 6 innings in his last look before this one made Wednesday's bounce-back a little less surprising, but the Cardinals needed exactly that kind of look to stop the bleeding against a division leader that had been steamrolling them all week.

Milwaukee's offense went ice cold at the worst time, managing just 1 run on 7 hits and committing an error that helped St. Louis tack on in a two-run sixth. It's a blip more than a trend for a lineup that had put up 4, 4 and 10 runs on the Cardinals in the previous three meetings — but it snapped a four-game winning streak and briefly slowed the Brewers' NL Central charge.

For St. Louis, at 48-43 and clearly the underdog in this division race, snapping a four-game skid against the team chasing them is worth more than the standings will ever show. Ryne Stanek's leg injury from Tuesday's doubleheader is still a lingering concern for a Cardinals bullpen that needs every arm healthy if they want to hang around the Wild Card picture into August.
