Reynaldo López got the ball for Atlanta trying to build on his return to the rotation, while Matthew Liberatore looked to steady a shaky summer for St. Louis when first pitch went off at 6:15 PM CT. Neither pitcher would end up with the story of the night, but the early damage was all Liberatore's opponent could ask for.

Atlanta managed just 1 run and lost 4-1, so the moneyline pick missed despite the better overall record.

Pregame

Atlanta went off as roughly a coin flip on the moneyline despite carrying the better overall record into St. Louis, which made the Braves the value side on paper. That price banked on Atlanta's deeper roster and López's encouraging return to the rotation outweighing a shaky Cardinals starter. It didn't hold up Saturday, but the process behind backing the stronger resume was sound.

The Braves are already down Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim, and they added left fielder Mike Yastrzemski to the 10-day injured list Saturday with elbow inflammation, thinning an outfield picture that was stretched thin to begin with. St. Louis, for its part, is still without Ramon Urias and just lost reliever Max Rajcic for an extended stretch, so both benches were operating shorthanded.

Atlanta still came in as the better team on paper, riding the National League's stronger record into Busch Stadium, but records don't hit in the first inning. St. Louis did, and that's ultimately what decided this one.

The Cardinals put a 3-spot on the board before the Braves recorded their third out and tacked on another in the fourth, and that was more than enough of a cushion. Atlanta chipped away with a single run in the seventh but never threatened to make it a real ballgame, managing just 6 hits and stranding traffic when it mattered.

It's a familiar shape for both clubs lately. The Braves have alternated hot and cold stretches all month, taking 2 of 3 from Pittsburgh only to drop the series opener here, while St. Louis has been just as inconsistent, getting blown out by Milwaukee one night and grinding out a win the next. Neither team has found the kind of sustained rhythm you'd expect from a contender in mid-July.

The injury list is doing a lot of the talking on both sides right now. Atlanta's rotation is already down Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, AJ Smith-Shawver and Martin Perez, which puts real pressure on López to keep building innings as he works back from last year's shoulder surgery. St. Louis is dealing with its own issues on the position-player side, and Liberatore's struggles this year have only made the Cardinals' margin for error thinner.
