Henderson's been about as good as any starter in the league not named Skenes, and he gets to throw at home against a Braves club that's still piecing together its pitching staff around the injuries. Milwaukee's sitting on the best record in baseball for a reason, and this is a spot where the arm advantage is real.

Braves
  • Atop NL East, Acuña and Olson mashing in August
  • Beat White Sox, split their last 5
  • Lost 3 straight to Twins before this series
  • Rotation without Strider, Schwellenbach; pen down two arms
Brewers
  • Owns best record in baseball at 80-49
  • Henderson dominant, won 2 straight, took series opener
  • Yelich batting near .220s, power mostly missing
  • Bullpen down three arms; Frelick still out in RF

Logan Henderson (7-2, 2.70 ERA) takes the ball for Milwaukee looking to keep building on one of the best rookie seasons in baseball, and he draws a Braves lineup that's found its power stroke again after grinding through a rough patch. Atlanta counters with Martín Pérez (8-7, 3.15 ERA), a crafty lefty who needs a bounce-back turn after his last outing got away from him in a hurry.

Both rotations are running thinner than their records suggest. Atlanta is still without Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach, both former aces parked on the 60-day IL, and the bullpen is missing Reynaldo Lopez and Robert Suarez as they work back from injury. Milwaukee isn't exactly whole either — JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Joel Kuhnel are all out of the pen, and Sal Frelick still hasn't been activated in right field.

This is just the second game of a quick two-game set before both teams fly out for Williamsport, so there isn't much time for either side to fully sort itself out before first pitch at 1:10 PM CT. Whatever's actually available in each bullpen tonight is what both managers are stuck with.

Atlanta still sits comfortably atop the NL East, and Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson have been doing plenty of the heavy lifting — Olson's pushing toward 40 home runs and the two of them have gone back-to-back more than once this month. Milwaukee's lineup has carried the best record in baseball largely without a fully healthy Christian Yelich, who's been stuck in the .220s at the plate for stretches even as Jackson Chourio has settled back in.

Neither team is walking in whole, and that's really the story here — two good rosters missing real pieces, with both starters trying to keep it from mattering. It's a matchup worth watching on its own merits before the circus of Williamsport takes over the sport's attention Sunday night.
