New York hasn't lost since before the Toronto series began, and the price reflects a team that's rolling with real depth behind it. Toronto's got the better arm on the mound today, which keeps this from being a lock, but a lineup missing Guerrero's typical impact and Gimenez is a tough ask against a club this hot.

Blue Jays
  • Dylan Cease dealing, struck out his 200th Aug 16
  • Guerrero Jr. reportedly nearing activation off IL
  • Rotation gutted: Yesavage, Taillon, Berrios, Corbin all out
  • Josh Smith freshly hit the 10-day IL
Yankees
  • Won 5 straight, just swept Baltimore
  • Weathers rounding into form his last few starts
  • Judge still without a firm return timeline
  • McMahon freshly hit IL, infield reshuffled again

New York took the series opener 3-1 Friday, its 5th straight win, and now it gets Dylan Cease on the mound trying to slow the bleeding. Cease struck out his 200th batter of the season in that Aug 16 start against the Yankees, a mark only a handful of pitchers have hit in 6 straight seasons, so this is not a mismatch on paper even with Toronto scuffling. Ryan Weathers draws the ball for the Yankees at 1:35 PM ET, looking to keep a strong recent stretch going against the team he just beat 5 days ago.

The lineups tell two different stories. New York's been getting healthier at the margins — Cody Bellinger is working through a rehab assignment and could be back as soon as Sunday — but it's still without Aaron Judge, who only just started a hitting progression on his ribs with no firm timeline, and Giancarlo Stanton remains sidelined. Toronto, meanwhile, is dealing with a fresh hit: Josh Smith landed on the 10-day IL after Tuesday's win over Tampa Bay, and Andres Gimenez was out of Friday's lineup with a hamstring issue.

None of that has moved the number much — Toronto's still getting a plus-money price to win outright, which tells you the market still respects Cease more than it respects a Blue Jays offense that's been shorthanded most of August. New York's price reflects a team that hasn't lost since the middle of last week and doesn't have to change anything to keep it going.

The bigger swing factor for Toronto is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He cleared concussion protocol after a rehab game at Single-A Dunedin and is reportedly in line to be activated for this series, which would hand John Schneider his middle-of-the-order bat back at the exact moment his club needs one. Schneider's already framed the recent stretch as a turning point, saying "maybe the baseball gods are changing their minds about us" — but a Wild Card push with a rotation this banged up needs its lineup whole to have a real shot.

Toronto's pitching depth chart is the real problem underneath all of it — Trey Yesavage, Jameson Taillon, Jose Berrios, Patrick Corbin, Jake Bloss, Cody Ponce and Bowden Francis are all out of the rotation picture in some form, which puts enormous weight on days when Cease is on the bump. New York doesn't have that issue; Max Fried is working back from an elbow injury, but the rotation around him has held up fine, and Ryan McMahon's fresh thumb sprain is an infield inconvenience, not a crisis. Two teams heading in very different directions meet with the standings still very much unsettled for one of them.
