First pitch went off at 6:40 PM ET, with José Soriano (10-6, 3.23 ERA) on the mound for a Toronto rotation that's been picked apart by injury, opposite Nick Martinez (12-4, 3.05 ERA), who came in off a complete-game win over the Athletics in his last turn out.

Tampa's staff couldn't hold up — Toronto plated runs in six different innings and finished with 17 hits, with a Rays error making a tough night tougher. The bullpen fatigue we flagged from that Orioles series showed up right where it hurts, and the roster gap never cut the way we had it priced. Wrong side, and not particularly close.

Pregame

Martinez has been about as good as any starter in the league of late, and Tampa Bay's the better roster even accounting for a bumpy week against Baltimore. Toronto's missing its best bat with Guerrero out, which makes backing the home side here fairly straightforward.

Toronto arrived without Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who's been working through MLB's concussion protocol after a collision with Yankees infielder George Lombard Jr. and wasn't eligible to return until Saturday at the earliest, according to Yahoo Sports. Tampa Bay had its own thin spots, running a bullpen down four relievers into a stretch that had already been leaned on hard against Baltimore, and the market still had the Rays favored at home regardless.

None of that ended up mattering much once the game actually started.

Toronto scored in six different innings and never let Tampa Bay get comfortable, piling up 17 hits against a Rays pitching staff that couldn't find a groove. The Rays clawed back with 3 runs in the 4th and 2 more in the 8th, but a Tampa error compounded the damage and the Blue Jays' lineup kept answering every time the home crowd found a reason to get loud.

It's the kind of loss that fits a rough stretch for Tampa Bay, which had dropped 4 of its last 5 games after getting run over by Baltimore for most of last week. The Rays still sit at 75-50 and hold the better record in the division by a wide margin, but the last-5 window has flipped from dominant to shaky in a hurry.

Toronto's own injury list is still enormous — Trey Yesavage and Jameson Taillon are both only just resuming throwing programs, and the rotation has been patched together with names like Soriano, a deadline pickup who's now settled in fast. Guerrero's absence didn't stop the offense from cashing in on almost every mistake the Rays' staff made, which says plenty about the depth Toronto's found even with its top bat out of the lineup.
