Germán Márquez gets the ball for San Diego fresh off a strong return from a forearm issue that shelved him since early May, while Kevin Gausman takes the mound for Toronto trying to find the version of himself that opened 2026 with back-to-back double-digit strikeout starts.

Hit — San Diego won outright 5-4, with the bullpen edge holding up as the deciding factor.

Pregame

We backed the Padres at plus-money early and the price has already started drifting toward even, which tells you the market liked this lean too. San Diego's bullpen, anchored by a lights-out closer, gives them a real equalizer even on nights the offense goes quiet. Toronto's rotation issues make them a harder team to trust as road favorites right now.

Gausman has been brutal for weeks now, and his last outing against San Francisco was more of the same — five hits, five walks and four earned runs in just 5.1 innings. Márquez, meanwhile, looked every bit worth the wait in his last turn, blanking Arizona over five scoreless frames. San Diego's lineup is banged up behind the plate with Luis Campusano scratched Sunday with abdominal soreness, but the bullpen behind Márquez is the best insurance policy in baseball right now with Mason Miller locking down the ninth.

Toronto took the series opener Saturday night 5-3, so there was real juice riding on this getaway-day finale beyond just the daily scoreboard. Both rosters are dealing with rotation attrition — Toronto is without Max Scherzer and Jose Berrios, San Diego without Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish — which has forced both clubs to lean harder on games like this one just to stay above .500.

The Padres jumped on Gausman for three runs in the second inning and it looked like it might be enough on its own. But Toronto kept chipping — two runs in the fourth, another in the eighth — and had the tying run in play deep into the game. San Diego's answer was to keep adding on, tacking two more in the bottom of the eighth to make sure a ninth-inning Blue Jays rally wouldn't matter.

Final tally: Padres 5, Blue Jays 4, with San Diego out-hitting Toronto's error-marred effort just enough to salvage the finale after dropping Saturday's opener. It's the kind of scrappy, back-and-forth win that won't move the standings much but says something about a Padres bullpen that keeps bailing out a shaky rotation.

Neither team is exactly rolling right now — Toronto sits 45-50, San Diego 47-48 — but both showed enough fight in this one to suggest the second half won't be a formality for either side. The health of each rotation is going to decide how much further these teams can push before the deadline.
