This one had ace-vs-ace billing on paper, with Dylan Cease (2.56 ERA) and Logan Webb (3.86 ERA) squaring off in the rubber match of a three-game set. Cease came in fresh off 7 shutout innings against Seattle with 9 strikeouts, the kind of form that's made him one of the American League's toughest outs all year. Webb was walking into Oracle Park after his last start went sideways in a hurry: 3 innings, 7 earned runs, 11 hits against Colorado.

Cease and the Jays cruised in a 10-0 shutout, cashing the moneyline pick with the ace-form bull point playing out exactly as drawn up.

Pregame

We took the Blue Jays at -116 before first pitch, banking on Cease's dominant form to outweigh Toronto's shaky overall record. Webb's disastrous July start made this a clear buy-low spot on the pitching matchup, and the Giants' injury-thinned lineup only added to the case.

The injury sheets tell part of the story here too. Toronto is still without Max Scherzer, who's rehabbing at Triple-A Buffalo, and outfield options Addison Barger, Jesus Sanchez and Anthony Santander are all sidelined. San Francisco's list is longer and pricier — Matt Chapman, Daniel Susac, Harrison Bader and Jonah Cox are all out, gutting the middle of a lineup that was already scuffling. That's a lot of thin depth on both sides walking into a series finale.

None of that mattered once the first inning got rolling, because Toronto put up a 5-spot before San Francisco recorded three outs. Cease didn't need to be perfect from there — the Jays' bats and three Giants errors did plenty of the work — but he made sure nothing crept back into the game.

The blowout also capped a wild stretch for both clubs. Toronto had dropped 3 straight to Seattle before flipping the switch against San Francisco, taking 2 of 3 in this series after getting run out of the building 10-1 in the opener. The whiplash extends further back for Webb, who was the NL's Pitcher of the Month in June with a 0.71 ERA before the calendar flipped and the wheels came off.

San Francisco's issues went beyond the mound Wednesday — 3 errors and 1 hit is about as ugly a full-team performance as it gets, and it dropped the Giants to 38-54 on the season. Toronto, at 44-49, is still under .500 itself, but a series win over a fading NL club and a dominant Cease outing are exactly the kind of building blocks a team hanging around .500 needs.

Two shaky rosters, but only one of them showed up. Toronto's pitching depth and timely hitting carried the day, while San Francisco's already-thin lineup couldn't overcome the absences piling up around it.
