This one turned into a pitcher's duel nobody expected given the numbers on the page. Cease came in at 2.28, Peterson at 5.35, and for most of the afternoon the gap looked even wider than that. Peterson battled through some traffic and gave up 7 hits, while Cease kept the Cubs off balance deep into the game.

This one graded out. The Cubs' recent form carried the day exactly as argued, even though Cease's start (7 hits allowed by Chicago's offense combined, dominant length) made it look like the wrong side for most of the game. The 9th-inning rally and 11th-inning walk-off run are precisely the 'find a way' quality we flagged pre-game.

Pregame

Chicago's the play here, and it's not close to a stretch — this is a club that's won 4 of its last 5 against real competition in the Yankees and Dodgers, riding a starter who's been dealing lately. Toronto's price reflects a team that's still live, but the roster attrition on that side is real and growing. Back the Cubs to win outright.

Toronto's lineup was already banged up walking in. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sat out again with the hamstring issue that's nagged him since late July, and things got worse in the 4th when Luis Urias had to be pulled with a lower-half injury. That's a lot of firepower missing from a Blue Jays team already scrapping for relevance in the AL East.

None of it mattered much through regulation. Toronto scratched across single runs in the 1st and 7th and carried a lead into the late innings behind Cease's shutdown stuff, out-hitting Chicago 11-5 for most of the day. But the Cubs, who've been the hottest team in the building all week, don't go quietly at home.

Chicago erased the deficit with a 2-run 9th to force extra innings, then finished it with a run in the 11th. It's the kind of finish that fits the moment — the Cubs have been winning close, ugly, and often lately, and Thursday was no different. Toronto, despite out-hitting its opponent by 6, walked away with nothing to show for it.

The form card tells the story before you even get to the box score. Chicago has won 3 straight and taken the first 3 of its set with the Dodgers, playing like a team that knows exactly where it's going this summer. Toronto is 3-2 in its last 5 but sitting at 54-61, a record that puts every game like this one squarely in the margins.

The injury list only reinforces the gap. Guerrero Jr. and Urias joining an already long Blue Jays IL ledger — headlined by Trey Yesavage's new meniscus diagnosis — leaves Toronto running thinner by the week, while the Cubs' walking wounded are mostly rehab arms working their way back rather than everyday difference-makers. That disparity is going to keep showing up in games decided in the 11th inning.
