Shane Bieber (3-2, 5.11 ERA) got the ball for Toronto with the trade deadline bearing down and his stock still smoking from a start where he lasted two-thirds of an inning and walked six of the nine batters he faced. Across from him, Houston turned to Cristian Javier (1-2, 6.59 ERA), who hadn't taken a big league mound since July 12 and was working back from a shoulder strain. First pitch was 7:10 PM CT.

Bieber, not Javier, was the pitcher who showed up clean — 5.2 innings, 1 earned run — while the Astros' 6-game streak stalled against exactly the volatility we flagged in the bear case. The hot streak and the home price both said Houston, but Toronto's inconsistent arm picked the wrong night to be consistent.

Pregame

Houston is the play here off a 5-game winning streak and an offense that's carrying the whole roster right now. Yordan Alvarez alone is enough to make backing the Astros' moneyline reasonable at this price, especially against a Blue Jays team that's already selling off parts. Bieber's command issues in his last outing only add to the risk on Toronto's side.

Javier's absence wasn't a footnote — he'd been out since April with a Grade 2 shoulder strain, made a handful of rehab starts in the minors, and there was real question about whether he'd even go back into the rotation or land in the bullpen. Toronto, meanwhile, walked in banged up everywhere: no Anthony Santander, no Addison Barger, no Bowden Francis or Jose Berrios, a lineup that's been running thin for months. None of it mattered much against a Houston offense that had been steamrolling everyone in front of it.

The Astros came in on a 6-game winning streak, 11 of 12, freshly finished sweeping Texas and sitting atop the AL West. Books had them favored comfortably and the market leaned their way on both the moneyline and the number. Toronto's counter was simpler: they'd won 4 of their last 5 too, quietly, without anybody talking about it.

Alejandro Kirk put Toronto up early with a second-inning homer, and a throwing error plus a sac fly from Ernie Clement made it 3-0 before Houston ever got on the board. Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez didn't do much to change the math, and it took a Jeremy Peña single just to get the Astros on the scoreboard at all.

Bieber, who called his last start his worst as a pro, answered with 5.2 innings and a lone earned run — the kind of outing that either steadies his trade value or complicates a deadline decision the Blue Jays clearly weren't eager to make. Javier gave Houston six innings and kept his pitch count in check, but three runs was enough against a bullpen-shortened Astros roster still without Carlos Correa for the year and Mike Burrows rehabbing an elbow.

It's one game in a long stretch for a Houston club that's still first in the division and playing its best baseball of the summer. But it's a reminder that even a team walking a hot streak has to actually beat what's in front of it every single night — and on this one, Toronto's fringe rotation piece had more left than the contender's bullpen could overcome.
