Noah Schultz (2-6, 5.94 ERA) got the ball for the series finale at 1:10 PM CT, opposite Oakland's J.T. Ginn (7-5, 3.60 ERA), and on paper this looked like the get-right start Schultz needed after a rough stretch. Ginn, by contrast, had been the more reliable arm of the two all year, even after a short 4.0-inning outing his last time out against Detroit.

White Sox cruised 9-1 as the cold A's offense predicted; Schultz's ugly ERA never factored into the outcome.

Pregame

White Sox came in at -114 to win outright, and that price looked fair against an Athletics club riding a 5-game losing streak and missing Nick Kurtz and Brent Rooker. Backing Chicago's offense to keep clicking at home was the read, with Schultz just needing to avoid a disaster start behind it.

Oakland walked in shorthanded. Nick Kurtz landed on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb capsule sprain and had to watch this week's All-Star Game from home instead of starting it, while Brent Rooker is done for the season after tearing cartilage in his left knee. Zack Gelof, another everyday piece, was banged up too. That's a lot of lineup to replace against a White Sox club that had already dropped 14 runs on this same pitching staff two days earlier.

It showed early. Chicago put up 6 runs in the first inning and tacked on 3 more in the fifth, turning what was supposed to be a tight finale into a laugher. The Athletics managed just 1 run of their own, and that was it for the scoring.

Friday's loss had already pushed Oakland's skid to 7 games, with the club getting outscored 58-20 during that stretch, and Sunday's result only piled on. Ginn didn't pitch badly by his own standards, but with 2 starters — Luis Severino and Gunnar Hoglund — already lost for the year, this rotation has zero margin when the lineup goes cold too.

Chicago's not exactly at full strength either — Trevor Richards is away on bereavement leave and Prelander Berroa is still weeks from throwing again, so the bullpen picture isn't pretty long-term. For one Sunday, though, none of that mattered. The sweep pushed the White Sox's win streak to 3 and sent Oakland home with its skid still very much alive heading into the All-Star break.
