Bryan Hudson (3-2, 2.20 ERA) got the ball for Chicago, working in the short-burst role that's turned him into one of the White Sox's best bullpen finds — his last outing was a tidy 1.2 innings against the Yankees. Across the diamond, Gage Jump (3-3, 3.52) started for an Athletics team that's lost 6 straight and desperately needed a length outing after his last one lasted just 3 innings against Miami.

White Sox won 1-0 — the bull case (Oakland's shorthanded offense couldn't score) played out exactly as expected.

Pregame

The White Sox opened around -103 on this one and the price still reflects a fairly even matchup on paper, but Oakland's offense without Kurtz, Gelof, and Rooker makes this closer to a mismatch than the number suggests. Chicago just torched this same pitching staff a day earlier, and there's no reason to think that changes. Backing the home side here is about as safe as moneyline bets get against a team that can't buy a run.

Jump has big stuff — a fastball that touches 97 — but he's still a 23-year-old figuring out the majors, and it showed again Saturday. The Athletics have scored 1 run or fewer in 3 of their last 5 games, and Nick Kurtz's absence with a thumb capsule sprain leaves an already thin lineup without its best hitter. Kurtz was hitting .266 with 20 homers and just found out he'll miss the All-Star Game he was voted to start.

Chicago won't confuse anyone for a juggernaut either — they've dropped 3 of their last 5 and were shut out twice in a home series against Boston earlier in the week. But against an Oakland team down Kurtz, Zack Gelof, and Brent Rooker (season-ending knee surgery), the margin for error on the South Side looked wide, and it played out that way.

This is about as low as it gets for the Athletics right now. They've lost 10 of their last 11 heading into this series and got run out of the building 14-1 by this same White Sox team just a day earlier. A lineup already missing three key bats managed just 4 hits and 0 runs Saturday, extending a stretch where opposing pitchers simply aren't afraid of this offense.

The final was as ugly as the box score suggests: 1-0, decided on a single Chicago run, with the Athletics managing nothing across 9 innings. It's the kind of game that buries a team's confidence further, and for a club already reeling, there's no obvious fix on the horizon with Kurtz sidelined into the All-Star break.
