Seth Lugo took the ball for Kansas City off a rough turn last time out — 4.2 innings and 5 earned runs against the Angels — while Oakland leaned on Jeffrey Springs, who's buried in a lost season at 3-11 with a 6.02 ERA. Neither pitcher had shown much swing-and-miss stuff recently, and Wednesday played out exactly like their lines suggested it might.

Kansas City did what the price expected, just not how anyone drew it up — the Royals trailed 5-2 into the 8th before erupting for 7 runs to escape 9-7. The bear case about Lugo's shaky command nearly buried the pick before the offense bailed him out late.

Pregame

Kansas City is properly favored here, and it's not just standings-blind math — Springs has been one of the most hittable starters in the league for weeks, and Oakland's lineup is missing three of its more dangerous bats. Back the Royals to make it 3 straight against this rotation.

Oakland's lineup is running on fumes right now. Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom and Shea Langeliers are all out, and Soderstrom is done for good — season-ending hip surgery was announced Friday. Kansas City has its own attrition to manage, with three bullpen arms on the shelf and Jac Caglianone forced out of this one with right ankle soreness, but the Royals still had far more healthy firepower to work with walking in.

Oakland actually built a cushion early, plating 2 in the first and 3 more in the fifth to go up 5-2. Springs and the Athletics' bullpen held that lead through six-plus innings, and for a while this looked like exactly the kind of game a shorthanded Kansas City lineup drops.

Then the Royals' offense woke up all at once. A 7-run outburst flipped a 3-run deficit into a 4-run lead, and Oakland's answer — 2 more runs in the 9th — wasn't enough to climb all the way back. Both clubs finished with 11 hits and zero errors, which tells you this wasn't a game either side was gifted; Kansas City just had the bigger punch when it counted.

It's the kind of win that fits where these two teams are. The Royals are scuffling through a losing season but playing loose and confident down the stretch, while the Athletics are picking through the wreckage of a roster stripped by injuries with little to play for beyond evaluating what's left. Neither club is going anywhere in 2026, but nights like this are exactly why Kansas City keeps finding ways to make Oakland's summer even longer.
