Brady Basso got the ball first for Oakland after a late change from the originally scheduled Jack Perkins, working around traffic before handing off to the bullpen. Across the way, Daniel Lynch IV made just his second career start after the Royals shifted him out of the bullpen, and Kauffman Stadium hosted the 6:40 PM CT first pitch under clear skies.

The moneyline cashed, but not the way the pre-game case drew it up — Lynch got roughed up early and Oakland actually led 3-1 into the late innings before Kansas City's bullpen and lineup bailed him out. The bullpen-depth bull point showed up exactly on schedule; Witt Jr.'s walk-off single sealed it in the 9th.

Pregame

Kansas City's the much healthier team standing in the batter's box right now, and the price reflects a roster gap as much as anything else. Oakland's simply not fielding a full lineup, and that's a tough spot to ask any pitcher to cover. The Royals are the play here off two straight wins and a rotation that's trending up.

Lynch's move to the rotation wasn't really a choice for Kansas City — Cole Ragans, Stephen Kolek and Luinder Avila have all had season-ending elbow surgeries, gutting the group he was pulled from to fill. Oakland's own staff is similarly picked apart, with Jeffrey Springs, Luis Severino and Gunnar Hoglund all sidelined and Jose Suarez working as an opener elsewhere in the rotation. Neither club came into this with a healthy pitching plan, which made the bullpens the story as much as the two guys who started it.

The Athletics grabbed the early advantage and made it stand up for a while. Zack Gelof walked, Jeff McNeil singled and Jonah Heim walked to load the bases, and Tommy White cashed in with an RBI single — though McNeil got greedy trying to score behind him and was thrown out at the plate, a mistake that kept the inning from getting away from Kansas City.

Oakland still turned that opening run and a two-run sixth into a 3-1 cushion, exactly the kind of lead a shorthanded staff needs to protect. It didn't hold. The Royals got one back in the 7th, then loaded the bases in the 9th on a catcher's interference call, a single and a walk. A two-run single tied it, and Witt Jr. capped a 4-hit night by ending it with the walk-off knock.

This was two also-rans playing out the string more than a marquee matchup — Oakland at 49-76, Kansas City at 52-74, neither with anything but pride and roster evaluation on the table in mid-August. But the Royals have quietly won consecutive games now, and finishes like this one are exactly how a lost season starts feeling less lost down the stretch.

For Oakland, it's another game where the pitching depth chart did the talking — Tyler Soderstrom is done for the year after Friday's season-ending hip surgery news, and Jacob Wilson sat out with a shoulder issue. Kansas City, patchwork rotation and all, found a way to win anyway, which says more about this Royals team right now than any specific arm on the mound.
