Houston is the clearly better team right now and just beat this exact opponent behind a shutout. Oakland's lineup is missing so many regulars that even a discounted Astros club should handle business more often than not.

Athletics
  • Lopez's last start was 6 K over 6 innings
  • Lost only 1-0 to Houston last time out
  • Lost 5 straight, swept by Kansas City
  • 7-plus regulars lost for the season
Astros
  • Just shut out this same Oakland lineup
  • Brown owns a sub-4 ERA on the year
  • Dropped 2 of last 3, including an 18-run shellacking
  • Pena still working back from a hand injury

Jacob Lopez gets the ball for Oakland, matched up against Hunter Brown as the Astros try to build on Friday's shutout win. First pitch is 6:10 PM CT.

Houston's lineup isn't at full strength either — Jeremy Pena is dealing with a hand injury and has been in and out of the lineup, and the Astros are already thin up the middle with Carlos Correa still on the 60-day IL. Oakland's situation is worse by a wide margin: the injury list reads like half a starting nine, from Nick Kurtz to Tyler Soderstrom to Brent Rooker, all done for the year.

None of that stopped Houston from cruising to a 4-0 win in the series opener, and the price on this one reflects the gap between a club fighting for playoff position and a team with baseball's worst record.

Oakland's collapse isn't a one-game thing. They've lost 5 in a row, getting swept in a 4-game set at Kansas City before Houston made it 5 with Friday's shutout. The offense has scored more than 3 runs exactly once in that stretch.

Lopez's own story has been a strange one — he was optioned to Triple-A in May after getting hit hard, then came back out of the bullpen before working his way back into a starting role. His last time out he went 6 innings with 6 strikeouts, easily his best look in weeks, even if the ERA still says he's been battered most of the season.

Brown's floor is a lot higher than Lopez's — a sub-4 ERA against a lineup that's been shut down repeatedly — but the walks have crept into his last outing, and against a team this beat-up, one bad Astros inning is still enough to keep it interesting.
