Sunday's series finale set up as a study in contrasts on the mound. Erick Fedde (5-6, 4.25) took the ball for Chicago looking to build on a clean four-inning outing against Texas, while Ronel Blanco (0-0, 8.10) got just his second start back from Tommy John surgery for Houston after a rocky 2026 debut.

The White Sox blew it open, 12-3, as Blanco's rust and Fedde's edge both played out exactly as hoped.

Pregame

We took the White Sox on the moneyline before this one, banking on the workload gap between a rusty Blanco and a Fedde who'd just thrown a clean four innings. Houston's win streak made this a live dog price, but the return-from-surgery variance was the real story of the day.

Blanco's return has been a stop-and-start process, and the workload gap showed. He's still finding his command after missing more than a year, while Fedde came in fresh off six strikeouts and zero walks over four innings against the Rangers. The Astros arrived without Carlos Correa, Hayden Wesneski and Spencer Arrighetti, all shelved, and Chicago was already missing Kyle Teel behind the plate before Colson Montgomery got scratched Sunday with a shin issue from Saturday's game.

None of that mattered much once the White Sox offense woke up. Houston had won five straight and taken the first two games of this series comfortably, but Chicago flipped the script in a hurry, turning a tight game into a laugher over the final three innings.

The White Sox trailed or sat even through five, then broke it open with 2 runs in the sixth, 4 in the seventh and 3 more in the eighth to finish with 12 runs on 12 hits. Houston managed just 3 runs on 7 hits and never got the big swing it needed against a bullpen that closed the door once Fedde handed things over.

It's a jarring result given the shape of this series and Houston's recent stretch. The Astros had won 9 straight games dating back through their homestand against Miami before this series, and had every reason to think a sweep was in play after taking the first two in Chicago. Instead, the finale reminded everyone the White Sox still have thump in that lineup when it shows up.

For Houston, the concern now is whether Blanco's return continues to be this bumpy — a taxed, injury-riddled rotation can't afford many more shaky outings like this one. For Chicago, it's a much-needed reminder that avoiding the sweep and getting a laugher like this can shift momentum, even on a team that had dropped 3 of its last 5 walking in.
