Sean Burke (7-4, 3.20) takes the ball for a White Sox club that's found its footing in the second half, while Hunter Brown (1-1, 4.05) gets the start for an Astros team searching for any kind of consistency. First pitch is 6:10 PM CT.

Chicago's the team playing meaningful baseball right now, and Burke gives them a real edge on the mound over a Houston rotation that's missing multiple arms. Brown's last outing was a mess — 6 walks in under 5 innings — and that kind of control trouble is a red flag against a lineup that's been grinding out at-bats all year. Back the White Sox to win outright at home.

Burke has been the anchor of a rotation nobody outside Chicago saw coming. His last time out, he shut down a Blue Jays lineup for 6.2 scoreless innings on the road, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 5. Brown, meanwhile, is still trying to climb out of a rough stretch — his last start against Baltimore lasted only 4.2 innings, with 6 walks and 4 earned runs allowed. That's the gap defining this series.

Houston's offense still runs through Yordan Alvarez, who's mashed his way into the AL MVP conversation even while the team around him treads water. But one bat can only cover for so much when the rotation behind Brown is thinned out by injuries and the bullpen keeps getting overworked in close games.

Chicago's turnaround has been the story of the season in the AL Central. A club that lost 121 games two years ago is now in first place, powered by a young core that manager Will Venable has let loose — Munetaka Murakami back from a hamstring strain and swinging it well, Miguel Vargas providing steady contact, and Colson Montgomery leading the team with 24 home runs. The White Sox are one of only two teams in baseball with three players at 20-plus homers.

Houston did just take 3 straight from Miami to snap a 4-game skid, so this isn't a team in total freefall. But that stretch came against a bad Marlins club, and the underlying issues — a rotation missing multiple starters and a shortstop spot without Carlos Correa, who's out for the season after ankle surgery — haven't gone anywhere.

Chicago's not without its own bumps and bruises — Kyle Teel is out for months with a high-ankle sprain and Drew Thorpe remains buried in a long rehab — but the depth the Sox have built up all year has masked those losses better than Houston's rotation issues have masked theirs. That gap in overall health and momentum is a big reason this series opener leans one direction.
