Spencer Arrighetti (7-5, 4.34) gets the ball for Houston, walking into a lineup that's been quietly building the best home record in baseball this side of the Dodgers. Davis Martin (9-5, 3.31) counters for Chicago, and he's been the steadiest arm in a rotation that's had to survive without half its Opening Day depth.

The White Sox are the play here, and it's not close to a coin flip — a 31-17 home record and Davis Martin on the mound against a rotation-depleted Astros club is a real gap. Houston's win streak is legitimate but came against a fading Marlins team, not a contender playing meaningful games at home. Chicago's price isn't cheap, but this is the side with the better roster and the better arm tonight.

Martin's last time out was actually a loss, a hard-luck 1-run, 5.2-inning outing against Toronto where the White Sox offense just didn't show up. That's been the exception rather than the rule for him this year — he's been Chicago's rock all season, tied for one of the best ERAs on the staff even after a pedestrian 2025. Arrighetti, for his part, has bounced around the strike zone lately; his last start against Baltimore was a no-decision where he battled command (4 walks) but still limited the damage to a single earned run over 5 innings.

The bigger story for both clubs right now is who's not available. Carlos Correa is done for the year after ankle surgery, and Houston's rotation depth has been gutted by injuries to Mike Burrows, Hayden Wesneski and Brandon Walter — that's a big reason Arrighetti's workload and results have been up and down. Chicago's dealing with its own attrition behind the plate, having just lost catcher Kyle Teel for 6-to-12 weeks with a high ankle sprain, plus a bullpen that's been running thin with arms like Jordan Leasure and Mike Vasil out since spring.

Despite the injury attrition, Chicago's offense hasn't missed much of a beat. Miguel Vargas has driven in 61 runs, Colson Montgomery has 24 home runs, and Munetaka Murakami adds another 20 — that's a lineup with real thump up and down. Houston counters with the best individual bat on the field in Yordan Alvarez, who's hitting .328 with 34 home runs and 77 RBI and can change a game by himself, but beyond him the Astros haven't had nearly the same consistency.

Both teams show up to first pitch at 6:40 PM CT playing their best baseball of the last week — Houston on a 3-game win streak against Miami, Chicago having taken 3 of its last 5 including a series win in Texas. The Astros are only 2 games back in the West and squarely in the wild-card conversation, which makes this series matter more than the sub-.500 record suggests. But Chicago's the team building something at home, and that's the bigger through-line here: a division leader trying to hold serve against a desperate opponent that's finally playing loose.
