Blade Tidwell gets the ball for San Francisco at 6:45 PM PT, making just his 4th big-league start opposite Hayden Wesneski, who's finally found his footing since coming back from Tommy John surgery. Wesneski's 2-0 this year, but he's never had much luck against the Giants specifically — 0-3 with an ERA north of 8 across 6 career meetings, per Reuters. This is his shot to flip that script against a lineup that's been shut out twice in its own building over the last week.

Houston's the better team on paper and it won't cost you much to back that — they're sitting as solid favorites at Oracle Park. Their top of the order has gone cold in San Diego, but a roster this deep should be able to cover for one bad stretch against a Giants team that's lost the plot. San Francisco is spiraling toward its 20th game under .500 and just doesn't have the pieces right now to beat a first-place club.

The bigger story is the roster Tony Vitello has to work with. Buster Posey used the trade deadline to sell off pieces and lean into a rebuild, according to McCovey Chronicles, and the injury list backs that up — Matt Chapman is done for the season after abdominal surgery, Harrison Bader isn't walking through that door either, and Daniel Susac is banged up behind the plate. Houston has its own absences with Carlos Correa and Brice Matthews still out, but the Astros at least have the depth to paper over it.

None of that is lost on the betting market, where Houston sits as a clear favorite and the total has drawn real sharp money on the under. That's the quick read. The deeper one is about which version of each team actually shows up at Oracle Park.

Houston's actually been the shakier team lately, losers of 2 straight and 2-3 across its last 5 after getting run out of San Diego 2-7 in the series finale. But context matters — the Astros have taken 1 of 3 from a Padres club fighting for a playoff spot, while the Giants have dropped 2 straight of their own, including the first 2 of a set with Texas. One team is losing to good teams. The other is just losing.

That split shows up on the injury front too — Houston is missing depth pieces, San Francisco is missing difference-makers.

Houston still has a half-game cushion on Texas and a comfortable buffer over Seattle in the AL West, so there's real incentive to stop the bleeding here rather than let a fading Giants team turn a bad week into a worse one. San Francisco, meanwhile, is just trying to avoid the kind of ugly, no-fight loss that's defined its last 9 games.
