Texas is the right side here off pure pitching math — Bradford's ERA dwarfs what Johnson's put up this year, and the Rangers already showed they can beat this team by taking the series opener. The Angels are 27 games under .500 for a reason, and losing Meckler and Schanuel only makes it harder against a club fighting for its playoff life.

Angels
  • Blew out Houston 18-3 last week
  • Won 2 of last 5 games
  • Johnson has a 6.41 ERA, 2-7 record
  • Missing Meckler (head) and Schanuel (side)
Rangers
  • Won 2 straight, took series opener vs Angels
  • Bradford's ERA sits at a sharp 2.93
  • Eovaldi and Leiter both out with injuries
  • Bradford still building up after elbow surgery

Ryan Johnson (2-7, 6.41 ERA) takes the mound for the Angels at 6:05 PM CT in Arlington, working against Cody Bradford (0-1, 2.93 ERA), who's still building back up after returning from a major elbow surgery that cost him the better part of two seasons.

Neither lineup is at full strength. The Angels will again be without Wade Meckler, who's being evaluated for a concussion after taking a pitch off the head, and Nolan Schanuel is out with side tightness — two bats gone from an offense that's already scuffling. Texas isn't exactly whole either: Nathan Eovaldi and Jack Leiter are both on the injured list, which means the Rangers' bullpen has been asked to cover extra innings all month, a workload that doesn't fully show up in the price.

That's part of why this line looks the way it does — Texas as the clear home favorite with the far better ERA on the mound. But form only tells you so much. The Angels put up 18 runs against Houston just days ago, a reminder that even a bad team can turn a bullpen game into a track meet, and Texas already needed a strong finish just to edge L.A. 2-1 in the opener of this set.

Zoom out and the standings tell the real story. Texas is fighting to stay in the Wild Card picture and can't afford to let a last-place team steal games in its own building. The Angels, meanwhile, are so far off the pace that they fired their pitching coach midseason — a sign of how far the staff has fallen off, Johnson included.

Bradford's stuff has looked fine in flashes, but his last outing was more survival than dominance — 8 hits allowed in just 4 innings against Oakland. If that trend continues, Texas is going to need its offense and its already-taxed bullpen to bail him out again.
