Walbert Ureña and MacKenzie Gore lined up as two 5-7 arms trying to right very different ships. Ureña came in hot, having limited Seattle to a single earned run over 5.2 innings with 6 strikeouts in his last look. Gore, by contrast, was still hunting his command after allowing 5 earned runs over 5 innings against Cleveland in his previous start. On paper, the Rangers' arm looked like the shakier bet — and by the end of the night, that read was dead-on.

The Rangers got run out of their own building 13-1, burying this pick as Gore and the pen couldn't touch a hot Angels lineup.

Pregame

We locked the Rangers to win outright at -152, banking on Gore's track record at home and a Texas club that had won 7 of its last 10 games. That price has since drifted to -129 as the market found some value on the road dog, but the pick stays put on the home club in a spot where they were the far more complete team on paper.

Texas is already navigating a beat-up lineup, with Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford and Josh Jung all sidelined or scratched and catcher Danny Jansen still weeks from returning. The Angels walked in dragging that 5-game skid and a 36-56 record that has them buried at the bottom of the AL West, hardly the profile of a team about to hang 13 on anybody. Texas entered the night just 1.5 games out of first, per FanDuel's pregame outlook, and had won 7 of its last 10 — the safer team on paper by a wide margin.

None of that mattered once the game actually started. Gore and the Rangers' bullpen had nothing, and an Angels lineup that had gone quiet all week suddenly turned into a machine, spreading 15 hits across the box score.

Los Angeles got on the board early and never let off the gas, tacking on 4 in the 5th and 2 more in both the 8th and 9th to bury any doubt. Texas managed just 3 hits all night, and its lone run didn't cross the plate until the 8th inning — a stunning no-show for a lineup that had been rolling entering the series, according to FanDuel's pregame research, and had a 15-30 road record for the Angels working against it on paper.

Injuries keep piling up in Anaheim, too — Ben Joyce, Travis d'Arnaud, Yusei Kikuchi and Grayson Rodriguez are all still working back from the IL, part of why expectations have stayed modest all year. None of it mattered against a Gore start that looked a lot like his rough outing against Cleveland the week before.

For Texas, this is the kind of loss that stings more with the AL West still tight — they can't afford many nights like this against a last-place club. For the Angels, it's a rare feel-good final score in a season that's mostly been a grind.
