Trevor Rogers (6-7, 4.19 ERA) took the ball for Baltimore against Reid Detmers (3-7, 3.97) at 6:35 PM ET, the second game of a series the Orioles are playing with a noticeably different roster than the one that showed up a week ago.

Call graded correctly — Baltimore won 5-2, exactly the outright script we banked on. The sharp money that piled onto the Orioles got paid, and a 3-run 4th put this game away well before the Angels ever got on the board. The bullpen fears never even got tested; Rogers and the pen combined to keep LA at arm's length all night.

Pregame

Baltimore's price reflects a real talent gap even after the deadline sell-off — this is still a .500-ish team against one of the worst records in baseball. Rogers has been the more trustworthy arm over his last several turns, and the Angels haven't shown much life against Orioles pitching in this series already. Backing the home side here is about form and roster quality, not just the number on the board.

Baltimore blew things up ahead of the deadline, shipping catcher Adley Rutschman to Boston and outfielder Taylor Ward to Seattle, with reliever Tyler Wells also moved out. Rogers, a pending free agent himself, said he stayed glued to his phone all day waiting to see if he'd be next before getting the news he was staying put. Rookie Christian Franklin stepped right into the outfield picture, and the early returns — a series-opening win behind a scoreless start from returning pitcher Cade Povich — suggested this club wasn't ready to fold just because the front office sold.

The Angels, meanwhile, are just trying to survive August. At 43-70 they'd dropped 4 of their last 5 games, and the injury list keeps growing — Sam Bachman went on the 15-day IL with forearm inflammation, Yusei Kikuchi's rehab outing turned into a mess, and long-term absences for Anthony Rendon and Yoan Moncada have hollowed out the left side of the infield.

None of that stopped Baltimore from putting this one away early. A 3-run 4th inning gave the Orioles control, and Rogers made it stand up before a 2-run 8th shut the door for good. Detmers and the Angels never found the big swing to answer, scratching across single runs in the 6th and 7th but nothing more — Baltimore out-hit LA 6-to-4 and played clean defense while the Angels committed an error.

It's not the deepest roster the Orioles have run out this summer, and the August 4 selling spree left real holes in the bullpen and behind the plate. But Wednesday was a reminder that a jumbled clubhouse doesn't automatically mean the players left standing forget how to win.

Baltimore stayed within shouting distance of a wild-card spot at 55-58, and the Angels' brutal season just got another loss piled on top of a record already 27 games under .500.
