Grayson Rodriguez takes the ball for the Angels carrying an 8.23 ERA that's been a season-long anchor, and his last outing didn't help the case — 4 innings, 6 earned runs against the Tigers. Logan Webb draws the start for San Francisco, and while his overall line still reads like a frontline arm, July has been a slog: he's winless in 3 starts this month, with 15 earned runs allowed across 16.2 innings.

San Francisco's the pick here even riding a 5-game skid, mostly because Logan Webb still gives them a real starter and the Angels are trotting out an 8.23 ERA arm. The Giants' offense has been the problem, not the pitching staff, and Webb at home is a better bet to keep this thing close and winnable than Rodriguez is to shut anyone down.

San Francisco could get some reinforcements soon. Matt Chapman has been progressing well in his rehab from a core injury and could be activated as soon as this homestand, which opens Friday against the Angels. Until he's back, the Giants are still without Harrison Bader, Victor Bericoto and Jonah Cox — three outfielders sidelined at once, which has thinned out a lineup that's produced 5 straight losses.

The Angels aren't exactly whole either. Anthony Rendon and Yoan Moncada are both out long-term at third base, Yusei Kikuchi is still building back from shoulder trouble, and the rotation is missing Jack Kochanowicz entirely following Tommy John surgery. It's a banged-up group trying to find any kind of rhythm before the calendar flips to August.

Mike Trout's presence adds a little juice to an otherwise low-stakes series. He's made just five trips to Oracle Park in his career and has managed exactly 1 home run in 21 plate appearances there — a rare cold spot for one of the sport's best hitters. With both front offices working the phones ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline, plenty of players in this series could be wearing different uniforms within two weeks.

Momentum is a fair way to separate these two right now. The Angels have actually won 3 of their last 5, including back-to-back wins over the Cardinals, while the Giants have dropped 5 in a row and haven't looked competitive doing it. That gap matters more than the standings suggest — one club is playing loose, the other is scuffling for any signs of life.

Neither roster is full-strength, but the injury math tilts differently for each side — the Angels are missing bats and rotation depth for the long haul, while the Giants' losses are more outfield-specific and closer to resolving with Chapman's return. That's a real swing factor in a series that otherwise has no postseason implications for either club.
