TLDR: Western Michigan is 3-0 in the MAC and has done it by grinding. Toledo has the more explosive offense and a home loss to Buffalo it would like everyone to forget. The Broncos' perfect league record is on the line at the Glass Bowl on Saturday, October 24.

Western Michigan, 3-0 in the MAC, visits Toledo. Both teams are 5-2. The Broncos win with Jalen Buckley's running and a defense that keeps scores low. The Rockets came into the Eastern Michigan game averaging 36.7 points but were held to 8 by Buffalo, a team Western Michigan beat on the road. Toledo's receiver injuries and whether the Broncos can control the clock will likely decide it, and the board hasn't posted a number yet.

Western Michigan Broncos
  • 3-0 in the MAC, won 3 straight
  • Buckley ran for 150 at Central Michigan
  • Allowed 21 or fewer in 4 of last 5
  • Lowry threw for only 48 yards at CMU
  • Lost 32-7 at home to Boise State
  • Last 2 road wins were by 3 and 7
Toledo Rockets
  • Averaged 36.7 points a game going into EMU
  • Won 34-14 at EMU, which came in 3-0 in MAC
  • Home at the Glass Bowl
  • TE Kelleher, WRs Gilbert Jr. and Jones all out
  • Scored 8 at home against Buffalo
  • Gave up 48 to Temple

Both teams are 5-2 and both have gone 4-1 in their last 5, but they got there in very different ways. Western Michigan has won 3 straight, and only 1 of those was comfortable. It beat Buffalo 20-17 and Central Michigan 21-14, and in between it handled Kent State 38-7. Toledo has been the bigger-scoring team. It put up 49 on Temple, 41 on San Diego State and 39 on Ball State, and it went into the Eastern Michigan game averaging 36.7 points a game, 30th in FBS.

Western Michigan's win at Central Michigan shows how it plays. Jalen Buckley ran for 150 yards and Broc Lowry threw for just 48. The Broncos ran the ball, held the Chippewas to 14 and left with the rivalry win. That approach works fine against most of the MAC. The worry is the 32-7 home loss to Boise State, the 1 game this season where they couldn't make it ugly enough.

Toledo has its own problem at receiver. TE T. Kelleher and WRs K. Gilbert Jr. and T. Jones have all been listed out with undisclosed injuries since October 10. That's the date of the 23-8 home loss to Buffalo, the 1 game this year the Rockets' offense went missing. They bounced back with a 34-14 win at Eastern Michigan, which had come in 3-0 in conference, so the passing game clearly still works without them.

Buffalo is the opponent both teams have played, and it's the most useful comparison on the page. Western Michigan went to Buffalo and won by 3. Toledo hosted Buffalo and scored 8. One result doesn't decide a game a week later, but it does say Toledo can be slowed down, and this Broncos defense has allowed 21 or fewer in 4 of its last 5.

Kelleher, Gilbert and Jones are the names to watch this week. None of them has a timetable, so Toledo's pass catchers on October 24 could look a lot like the group that just scored 34 in Ypsilanti. If any of them comes back, the Rockets' passing game gets deeper. Western Michigan's injury list in our data is empty, and that's a real advantage at this point of the season.

The weather shouldn't be a factor: 62 degrees, mostly sunny, 5 mph wind and a 1% chance of rain. The game comes down to whether Western Michigan can run the ball and keep Toledo's offense on the sideline, or whether the Rockets score fast enough to force Lowry to throw. The winner comes out of this as a real contender in the MAC race.
