TLDR: Kentucky has made a habit of winning SEC games by a whisker, and Vanderbilt has made a habit of handing games away. Something gives in Lexington on Saturday, October 24.

No. 15 Kentucky (6-1) hosts Vanderbilt (3-4, 0-4 SEC) on a 5-game winning streak, but 3 of those wins came by 8 points or fewer. Vanderbilt has lost 4 straight, and turnovers from Jared Curtis plus a run defense that every SEC opponent has gashed are the main reasons why. A Kentucky defense that just forced 4 interceptions at Oklahoma is a rough draw for a quarterback trying to clean that up.

Vanderbilt Commodores
  • Sherrill and Curtis hit big plays downfield
  • Stayed within a score of Auburn on the road
  • Curtis threw 2 costly INTs vs Arkansas, including a pick-six
  • No SEC opponent held under 139 rushing yards
  • Zero sacks, 3 TFLs against Arkansas
Kentucky Wildcats
  • Defense forced 4 INTs and 5 sacks at Oklahoma
  • Minchey efficient: 21 of 28, 2 TDs, no INTs at Oklahoma
  • Faces an 0-4 SEC defense that can't stop the run
  • Last 3 SEC wins by 1, 1 and 8 points
  • Passing game modest: 158 yards at Oklahoma
  • RB T. Mizell out for the season

This one comes down to the quarterbacks and what each defense does to them. Kenny Minchey didn't light it up at Oklahoma, going 21 of 28 for 158 yards, but he hit tight end Willie Rodriguez for both touchdowns and didn't give the ball away. Across the field, Vanderbilt's Jared Curtis threw 2 interceptions against Arkansas. One was a second-quarter pick-six while the Commodores were ahead, and the other came with 3 minutes left as Vandy drove inside Razorbacks territory. Those 2 turnovers led directly to 10 Arkansas points in a 10-point loss.

That's a bad fit for what's coming. Kentucky's defense picked off Oklahoma 4 times in Norman, with 2 each from Ty Bryant and Jordan Castell, and added 5 sacks. Castell's 41-yard pick-six turned out to be the difference in a 21-13 grind. The Wildcats are 6-1, bowl eligible and 3-0 on the road in SEC play, and they're No. 15 in the AP poll. The Kentucky backfield has been without running back T. Mizell since August, and he's projected to miss the rest of the season.

Vanderbilt isn't a team without teeth. Senior receiver Junior Sherrill had 8 catches for 99 yards and a touchdown against Arkansas, and Curtis hit Ja'Cory Thomas for 39 yards. When the Commodores connect deep, they move. The trouble is everything in between those big plays, and a defense that can't get stops. It's a 0-4 SEC record for a reason.

Look at Kentucky's 5 straight wins and the margins jump out. The Wildcats beat South Carolina 35-34 on the road and LSU 35-34 at home, then won at Oklahoma by 8 thanks to a defensive touchdown. This is a team that finds a way, not one that runs people off the field. Vanderbilt's 4 straight losses go the other way: a 6-point loss at Auburn, then 24 at Georgia, 35 at home to Ole Miss, and 10 to an Arkansas team that came to Nashville on a 14-game SEC losing streak and left with that streak snapped.

Vanderbilt's real problem is up front. Arkansas ran for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns at 4.6 a carry, from an offense that came in averaging 99 rushing yards a game. Through 4 SEC games, no opponent has run for fewer than 139 against the Commodores. They also didn't record a sack against Arkansas and managed just 3 tackles for loss. If Kentucky can lean on the ground game even without Mizell, Minchey won't need to do much. Vandy's best hope is to protect the ball, take its deep shots to Sherrill, and make a Kentucky team that keeps playing 1-score games play another one. Early forecasts for Kroger Field call for a cloudy, mild night with little wind, but that's still a week out.
