TLDR: Tennessee just held Alabama to 149 yards and had its fans on the field at Neyland. Next it goes to Columbia to play a South Carolina team that finally ended its SEC losing streak and won't have played in 2 weeks by Saturday.

No. 14 Tennessee goes to Williams-Brice 1 week after beating Alabama 26-10 behind DeSean Bishop's 159 rushing yards and a defense that held the Tide to 149 yards. South Carolina is coming off a week without a game and a 38-19 win at Florida in which LaNorris Sellers accounted for 5 touchdowns. The game likely comes down to whether a Gamecocks defense that gave up 41 and 35 at home can stop Tennessee's run game, and whether Sellers can keep it up against a much better defense than Florida's. The board has it close to even.

Tennessee Volunteers
  • Defense held Alabama to 149 yards, 4 sacks
  • Bishop ran for 159 and 2 TDs against Alabama
  • Allowed 17 or fewer in each of the last 4
  • Short week after an emotional, field-storming win
  • Brandon's shoulder and Gordon's leg are open questions
  • Offense has topped out at 26 in SEC play
South Carolina Gamecocks
  • Sellers had 5 TDs, his best game in nearly 2 years
  • Extra week of rest before this game
  • Has scored 34 or more in 4 of its last 5

It starts at quarterback, and the 2 situations aren't alike. LaNorris Sellers is coming off his best game in nearly 2 years: 23-of-35 for 279 yards and 5 total touchdowns in the 38-19 win at Florida. Shane Beamer said after the game that "He was a freaking dude today." On Tennessee's side, Brandon was listed as probable with a shoulder injury going into the Alabama game. The Vols barely needed him. They ran it and played defense.

That's the real problem for South Carolina. DeSean Bishop ran for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns against Alabama. Tennessee's defense got 4 sacks, forced 3 turnovers and was after Keelon Russell all day. The Gamecocks gave up 41 to Mississippi State and 35 to Kentucky at home, and their defensive front is already thin. D. Stewart is out with a back injury, and G. Brownlow-Dindy has been questionable with an upper-body injury. If Bishop runs like he did against Alabama, Sellers spends the afternoon on the sideline.

The schedule matters here too. South Carolina hasn't played since the Florida game, so Beamer gets 2 weeks to prepare for one opponent. Tennessee gets 6 days to come down from its biggest win of the year, and it plays its first road game since Arkansas. The win over Alabama was a statement, and the Vols now have to follow it up on the road.

The Vols have won 3 straight, and the scores tell you how they do it: 24-14, 24-17, 26-10. They don't win by lighting up the scoreboard. They win by keeping the other team in the teens. The only loss was 20-17 at home to Texas. South Carolina is the opposite kind of team. It scores 34 and still loses. The Gamecocks lost to Mississippi State by 7 and Kentucky by 1 before the Florida win ended an 8-game SEC losing streak. One caveat on the Florida game: ESPN noted that Sellers' 4 touchdown passes came against the worst passing defense in the league.

Both teams have injury questions in the backfield and up front. Tennessee has lost OG W. Moe Jr. and LB J. Harmon for the season, and RB J. Gordon has been questionable with a leg injury for weeks. That makes Bishop even more important. South Carolina has lost 2 receivers for the year, J. Sellers and J. Gibson. That's why the Florida game mattered: Sellers spread 4 touchdown passes across Nyck Harbor, Mazeo Bennett Jr., Donovan Murph and Lex Cyrus. Saturday, October 24 will show whether that passing game holds up against a defense that just held Alabama to 149 yards.
