TLDR: North Carolina has finally started stacking wins. Syracuse has lost 11 straight ACC games, the second-longest run in program history. Saturday at Kenan Stadium, one of those streaks gets extended.

North Carolina (4-2, 2-1 ACC) hosts Syracuse (2-4, 0-4) having won 2 straight one-score ACC road games, while the Orange have lost 11 straight conference games. Syracuse can move the ball with Malachi Nelson, but turnovers keep sinking it, and his collarbone is still a question. Carolina's late-game scoring and its depleted tight end room are why this might be closer than the records say.

Syracuse Orange
  • Nelson threw for 315 and 2 TDs vs Louisville
  • 3-point losses to Cal and Virginia: competitive weekly
  • Put up 42 at UConn, can score in bunches
  • 3 second-half turnovers gave away Louisville game
  • 11 straight ACC losses, 0-4 in conference
  • Nelson's collarbone status still unresolved
North Carolina Tar Heels
  • Won 2 straight one-score ACC road games
  • McGill and Dopson made the closing plays at Duke
  • Beat Pitt, the team that handled Syracuse
  • Scoreless for 41-plus minutes after leading Duke 17-0
  • Both tight ends Washington and Warren out
  • Two wins came by just 4 points each

Start at quarterback, because that's where Syracuse's week starts. Malachi Nelson went into the Louisville game on the injury report with a collarbone problem, listed questionable. He started anyway, his 2nd start for the Orange, and threw for 315 yards with 2 touchdowns, including a 41-yard strike to Umari Hatcher. He also threw 2 interceptions. Nobody has said yet whether the collarbone is a bigger concern 1 week on, so his status for Saturday, October 24 is the first thing to watch.

The Louisville loss ended 34-26 at the JMA Wireless Dome, and the student paper called it a quarterback fiasco. The plain version: Syracuse turned it over 3 times in the 2nd half and gave away a game it was in. That's been the theme. The Orange lost to Cal by 3 and to Virginia by 3, and the only win in their last 5 was a 42-41 shootout at UConn. They are 0-4 in the ACC and 2-4 overall.

North Carolina isn't scaring anybody either, but it's figuring out how to close. The Tar Heels have won 2 straight as of this week, both 4-point road wins in the ACC: 21-17 at Pitt, then 24-20 at Duke to take back the Victory Bell for the 1st time since 2023. They're 4-2 and 2-1 in conference, and with the losses coming against Clemson and Notre Dame, there's nothing embarrassing on the résumé.

Still, the Duke win should bother Carolina more than it's letting on. The Heels went up 17-0 in the first 17 minutes, then didn't score for more than 41 minutes while Duke took a 20-17 lead in the last 5. Jaylen McGill bailed them out with a 24-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left, and Kenton Dopson III sealed it by picking off Walker Eget at the UNC 15 with 14 seconds to go. A team that goes that long without scoring can't assume it'll put away a Syracuse offense that just threw for 315.

The common opponent tells you a lot. Syracuse went to Pittsburgh and lost 27-13. North Carolina went there and won 21-17. Carolina's offense is also thin at 1 spot: both J. Washington and J. Warren, the tight ends on the report, are out indefinitely, so the Heels have been winning without that piece of the passing game. Kickoff is forecast at 55 degrees, clear, with a 6 mph wind, so the weather won't decide this. Turnovers will. If Syracuse protects the ball, it has hung around with everybody. If not, this looks a lot like the Louisville game.
