TLDR: Ball State finally won a road game, needing overtime and a 2-point conversion at Bowling Green to do it. Now the Cardinals come home to face a Sacramento State team that has been flattened 5 straight times in its first FBS season.

Ball State is coming off its first MAC win under Mike Uremovich, a 32-31 overtime win at Bowling Green carried by Keldric Luster's 195 passing and 125 rushing yards. Sacramento State, 1-5 in its first FBS season, hasn't scored more than 10 in any of its last 5 and lost to that same Bowling Green team by 28. Ball State's leaky defense and missing pass-catchers are the main reasons this might be closer than it looks, and the board hasn't opened yet.

Sacramento State Hornets
  • Ball State defense allowed 26+ in each of last 5
  • Ball State down WR Talbert and TE Coonrod
  • 10 points or fewer in each of last 5
  • Lost 38-10 at Bowling Green, the team Ball State beat
  • Allowed 31+ in every game of the skid
Ball State Cardinals
  • Luster: 195 passing, 125 rushing at Bowling Green
  • Horton scored twice, including the OT touchdown
  • Won at Bowling Green by 1, Sac State lost there by 28
  • Defense allowed 26+ in each of last 5
  • WR Talbert and TE Coonrod both out
  • Needed a last-play TD and OT to beat Bowling Green

This one runs through Keldric Luster. Ball State's quarterback was the whole offense at Bowling Green: 16-of-24 for 195 yards and a touchdown through the air, plus 125 yards and another score on the ground. Down 7 with 1:01 left in regulation, he drove the Cardinals 78 yards and hit Eli Hohlt for a 20-yard touchdown on the last play. Then in overtime, after TJ Horton punched in his second touchdown of the day, Mike Uremovich went for 2. Luster found Alex Scherle in the front corner and that was the game.

That win carried more weight than the 32-31 score suggests. It was Uremovich's first MAC win in his second year, and it ended a 14-game road losing streak going back to October 2024. It also didn't come easy on the depth chart. Ball State is still without WR D. Talbert, out since late September, and TE C. Coonrod, out since the Northwestern game, so Luster has been doing it with a thinner set of targets than the Cardinals opened the year with.

Sacramento State is in a much worse place. The Hornets are 1-5 and 0-4 in conference play in their first FBS season, and they haven't scored more than 10 points in any of their last 5 games. Ohio was the latest: 48-7 at Hornet Stadium on homecoming week. The week before that they lost 38-10 at Bowling Green with just 145 passing yards, which happens to be the same Bowling Green team Ball State just beat on the road.

Both teams have that Bowling Green result in common, and it's about as close to a head-to-head as this matchup gets. Ball State went to Bowling Green and won by 1 in overtime. Sac State went there and lost by 28. That doesn't make the Cardinals world-beaters. Their defense has given up 26 or more in each of their last 5 games, including 51 to Liberty and 45 to Northwestern. But a Hornets offense putting up single digits most weeks hasn't shown it can take advantage of a defense that leaky.

Kickoff is Saturday, October 24 at Scheumann Stadium, and the early forecast is 68 and cloudy with no rain and an 8 mph wind. Weather won't be an excuse for anyone. For Ball State, this is a chance to stack wins for the first time in a while and play like it belongs back in the MAC race. For Sac State, the bar is lower: score some points, stay in the game into the second half, and give the Hornets something to build on in a brutal first year up a level.

No line is up yet, so there's nothing to bet. What the game hinges on is clear enough already: Luster's legs against a Sac State defense that has given up 31 or more in each of its last 5, and whether the Hornets' offense can show up at all on the road.
