TLDR: Neither of these teams expected to be unranked in late October, and that's where both of them are. Oregon comes to Champaign on Saturday, October 24, needing to stop the bleeding, and Illinois would love a big-name win to give a .500 season some shape.

Oregon comes to Champaign unranked and waiting on Dante Moore, who has missed time with a concussion from the USC game and is still listed as questionable. Illinois is a .500 team that just survived Michigan State in overtime after blowing a 16-point lead, and it's missing 3 tight ends for the season. The game mostly comes down to whether Moore plays and what Oregon's October 17 game against Nebraska did to the Ducks' season.

Oregon Ducks
  • Moore questionable, not out, after missing 2 games
  • Offense hung 41 on USC with Moore under center
  • 84-0 rout shows how high the scoring ceiling is
  • Managed only 15 points against UCLA without Moore
  • Receivers Stewart and McClellan out, Gresham questionable
  • Lost CB Flowers for season; gave up 39 at Oklahoma State
Illinois Fighting Illini
  • Clayton scored on 5 straight drives vs Michigan State
  • Bielema 5-0 in overtime at Illinois
  • Home noon kickoff against a team crossing 2 time zones

The whole game starts with who plays quarterback for Oregon. Dante Moore took a head shot in the win at USC and was diagnosed with a concussion. Dan Lanning said Moore was "going to be OK" but that the Ducks would be careful with him, and they have been: Moore sat out the UCLA game and was ruled out for Nebraska too. Oregon's injury report still lists him as questionable. Brock Thomas started against UCLA and went 11-of-15 for 156 yards and 1 touchdown, which is efficient. But 15 attempts is a game plan that doesn't trust the quarterback, and Oregon lost 17-15 at home.

Illinois has no such question. Michael Clayton is the guy, and he won the Michigan State game in overtime by hitting Hudson Clement for a 25-yard touchdown on the first snap. That win was also the season in miniature. The Illini scored on their first 5 drives and went up 16 midway through the third quarter. Then they let the Spartans all the way back, with help from a failed fourth-and-1 sneak at their own 33, and survived only because Xavier Scott broke up a trick-play 2-point try. Bret Bielema is now 5-0 in overtime at Illinois. That's a nice stat, but it also means his teams keep ending up in coin flips.

Then there's the Oregon game nobody can see yet. The Ducks hosted Nebraska at Autzen on October 17, and going in, a third loss was being framed as the end of Oregon's College Football Playoff hopes. Whatever happened in that game decides what kind of team gets off the plane in Champaign: one fighting for a spot or one playing for pride. There's no board on this one yet, so there's no read on the number.

The Oregon schedule has been all over the place. The Ducks hung 84 on Portland State and won by 14 at USC, then lost the shootout at Oklahoma State and could barely move the ball against UCLA once Moore was out. Illinois has been more predictable. It handles the overmatched teams, like the 48-10 win over Southern Illinois, and loses the coin flips to Duke and Purdue. It lost by 23 the one time it played an elite team, at Ohio State. Oregon at full strength is closer to Ohio State than to Purdue. Oregon without Moore probably isn't.

Both sides have injury problems at the positions their offenses rely on. Oregon's receiver room is thin: E. Stewart and J. McClellan are out and D. Gresham is questionable with a neck injury. Cornerback A. Flowers is done for the year, so a secondary that has already given up 39 to Oklahoma State is down a body. Illinois has lost 3 tight ends for the season (G. Smith, B. Thurman and T. Hollinger) plus receiver A. Perry. RB J. Forster and WR N. Rankin are both questionable. With the tight end room gone, a Bielema offense loses a lot of its usual blocking and play-action looks.

The early forecast for Gies Memorial Stadium is 68 and cloudy with about a 12 mph wind and almost no chance of rain. That's a fine afternoon for football, and the forecast will probably shift before kickoff. The bigger question is whether Moore gets cleared this week. If he does, Oregon has the best player on the field, and its attack looks a lot more like the one that put up 41 at USC. If he doesn't, Illinois gets a quarterback with 1 start this year, a short receiver group and a home crowd, and that's a winnable game for the Illini.
