Navy rolls into Charlotte fresh off an 11-2 season and a Liberty Bowl blowout. The 49ers are still looking for their first American Conference win under Tim Albin.

This is about as lopsided as a conference matchup gets on paper. Navy finished 2025 ranked No. 23 in the country and enters this season with the best odds in the American Conference to win the league outright. Charlotte, meanwhile, went 0-8 in conference play a year ago and heads into the Friday, November 27 matchup still trying to prove it belongs on the same field.

Navy's identity doesn't change year to year, and that's the whole point. Brian Newberry's triple-option grinds out possessions and eats clock, and the Midshipmen reportedly return the vast majority of snaps on both sides of the ball heading into 2026. The one real question mark is at quarterback, where Navy has to replace Blake Horvath, who put up back-to-back 1,200-yard rushing seasons running the option.

Charlotte's turnaround under Tim Albin hasn't shown up yet. He built a MAC champion at Ohio before taking over the 49ers, but year one in Charlotte was a 1-11 disaster with zero conference wins. The staff brought in reinforcements this offseason, but a preseason win total sitting near 2.5 tells you exactly how the outside world views this program right now.

The gap here isn't really about scheme or matchups — it's about talent and continuity. Navy's returning cast knows exactly what it's doing within an option attack that's notoriously hard to prepare for on a short week, let alone for a roster still figuring out its own identity. Charlotte's issues last year weren't limited to one side of the ball, and there's no obvious reason to expect a flipped script against one of the American's most complete teams.

There's a version of this game where Navy treats it as a look-ahead spot late in the year with bigger conference stakes elsewhere, and Charlotte finds a way to make it competitive for a half just by playing with desperation at home. But desperation only gets you so far against a program that controls tempo as well as Navy does. Until the 49ers show they can stop the option or sustain drives of their own, results like last season's are the baseline expectation, not the exception.

Bowl eligibility and league standing matter plenty for Navy down the stretch, and games like this are how a good team stays a good team — handle business, protect the depth chart, keep rolling. For Charlotte, every rep against a team of Navy's caliber is still developmental, a chance to see where the rebuild actually stands heading into the next stretch of the schedule.
