TLDR: Georgia State shows up in Jonesboro after getting run off the field by unbeaten James Madison, and Arkansas State finally has a Sun Belt win to build on. Both teams need this one to stay in the conference race.

Georgia State (4-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) visits Arkansas State (3-4, 1-2) after a 49-22 beating at unbeaten James Madison, where its passing game managed only 134 yards. The Red Wolves won 23-13 at Southern Miss for their first league win, but they've been without RB D. Spencer all year and their defense has swung from great to awful from one week to the next. The result likely hinges on which version of each team shows up.

Georgia State Panthers
  • Beat common opponent Kennesaw State by 14 on road
  • Scored 35 and 42 in back-to-back October wins
  • Both losses came to UCF and unbeaten JMU
  • Brown held to 134 passing yards vs JMU
  • Defense allowed 515 yards, JMU 6-for-6 in red zone
  • Trailed 35-10 at half in last outing
Arkansas State Red Wolves
  • Held Southern Miss to 13 in road win
  • Home in Jonesboro after a road win
  • Showed it can score, 49 vs South Alabama
  • RB D. Spencer out for season (knee)
  • Gave up 56 at home to South Alabama
  • Lost 1-score games to Louisiana and South Alabama

This is a Sun Belt game, plain and simple. Georgia State is 4-2 and 1-1 in league play. Arkansas State is 3-4 and 1-2, and that 1 conference win came from beating Southern Miss 23-13 on the road. Whoever loses Saturday, October 24 at Centennial Bank Stadium falls behind in the conference with a lot of season still left. The way the Panthers lost last time is the bigger worry. They didn't just fall to James Madison, they got buried, 49-22, and trailed 35-10 at halftime.

That JMU game is worth a closer look. Cameran Brown went 13-of-25 for 134 yards with a touchdown and an interception. That's a thin day for an offense that put up 35 on Northern Illinois and 42 on Old Dominion back to back. On the other side, the Dukes piled up 515 yards and went 6-for-6 in the red zone. George Pettaway ran for 119 on 14 carries, so a defense that had been holding teams to 10 and 14 points got pushed around on the ground. Arkansas State's offense would love to see that tape.

The Red Wolves aren't built to punish anybody on the ground right now, though. Running back D. Spencer has been out since August with a knee injury that's projected to end his season, and the offense has been inconsistent without him. Arkansas State scored 7 at TCU, then put up 49 in a home loss to South Alabama, and won 17-14 over Kennesaw State. Nobody has found a steady identity yet.

Both teams played Kennesaw State, and that comparison helps Georgia State. The Panthers went on the road and beat the Owls 31-17. Arkansas State needed every point to win 17-14 at home. The rest of the schedules point the same way: Georgia State's 2 losses came to UCF and an unbeaten JMU team, while Arkansas State has dropped 1-score games to Louisiana and South Alabama, which are the kind of games a 3-4 team has to start winning.

Arkansas State's defense is the wild card. It gave up 56 to South Alabama, then held Southern Miss to 13 on the road 9 days later. If that second version shows up in Jonesboro against a Georgia State passing game that just managed 134 yards, this is a grind. If the South Alabama version shows up, Georgia State's offense from early October gets back on track fast.

Weather won't be an excuse for either side: the forecast calls for 74 degrees, cloudy, 4 mph wind and no rain. It comes down to whether Georgia State's offense looks like the one that hung 42 on Old Dominion or the one that stalled in Harrisonburg. For Arkansas State, it's whether the Southern Miss defense was a turning point or a one-off.
