TLDR: Eastern Michigan came into last weekend's homecoming with first place in the MAC on the line and left with a 34-14 loss to Toledo. The Eagles head to Athens on Saturday, October 24, to face an Ohio team that hasn't lost in conference play.

Eastern Michigan (3-1 MAC) goes to Athens after Toledo handed it a 34-14 home loss, its first conference defeat. Ohio has won 4 straight and is unbeaten in league play, but that run was padded by Stonehill and Sacramento State, and the Bobcats needed everything to win 13-10 at Kent State. The result probably comes down to whether Eastern Michigan can move the ball with both tight ends and 2 receivers out, and how Ohio holds up after a late-night trip to Sacramento.

Eastern Michigan Eagles
  • Won at UMass and Akron, so they've handled road trips
  • Only 1 MAC loss, so they're still in the race
  • Ohio's offense managed 13 points at Kent State
  • Both tight ends out, no timetable for either
  • 4 pass-catchers on the Out list
  • Lost by 20 to Toledo and by 44 to Wisconsin
Ohio Bobcats
  • Won 4 straight, 127-38 combined
  • Unbeaten in MAC play so far
  • Only 1 player out, WR R. Perry

There's real MAC weight on this one. Eastern Michigan is 3-1 in league play after Toledo became the first conference team to beat it. Ohio has gone through its MAC games without a loss so far. A second conference loss would push the Eagles back into the crowd, and a home win would keep the Bobcats on top of the standings heading into November.

Watch the schedule spot. Ohio played at Sacramento State in a 7 PM Pacific kickoff on the Hornets' homecoming night, then flew across the country and got a normal week to prepare. They won 48-7 and the starters were probably done early, but a late-night West Coast trip still costs a Sunday. Eastern Michigan stayed home for Toledo and gets a short bus ride to Athens.

Ohio has won 4 straight as of this weekend, and the scores are lopsided: 127 points scored and 38 allowed across that run. The schedule needs some context, though. Stonehill and Sacramento State, a first-year FBS program that was 1-5 going into the game, account for 83 of those points. Against MAC teams it was a 31-14 home win over Central Michigan and a 13-10 grind at Kent State. In that Kent State game the offense looked very ordinary for 4 quarters.

Eastern Michigan's season has been uneven. They lost 54-10 at Wisconsin, then beat Lindenwood, UMass and Akron in a row. The 38-14 win in Amherst came on the road, and the 25-23 win at Akron took nerve. Toledo then handled them at The Factory with first place at stake. The Eagles have played well against teams below them and poorly against the two best teams they've faced, and Ohio will be the third.

Injuries are the bigger worry for Eastern Michigan's offense. Both tight ends, B. Shelton and P. Kokaly, went on the report as Out with undisclosed injuries the day of the Toledo game, and neither has a timetable. Receivers B. Minner and N. Devereaux are out too, and Devereaux has been missing since September. That's 4 pass-catchers gone, with the tight end room taking the worst of it. Ohio has 1 name on its report: receiver R. Perry, who's expected to miss the rest of the season.

The weather in Athens shouldn't be a factor. The forecast is 69 degrees and mostly sunny, with a 4 mph breeze and no rain expected. That leaves this as a straight football game: a banged-up Eastern Michigan passing game against an Ohio team whose winning streak has been longer than it has been impressive.
