James Madison closed out the 2025 regular season by hanging 59 points on Coastal Carolina — a beatdown so ugly it cost Tim Beck his job. Four months out from the rematch, Coastal has a new coach trying to make sure that number never happens again.

There's no getting around the history here. James Madison enters 2026 as the favorite to repeat as East Division champs, with eight Dukes landing on Phil Steele's preseason All-Sun Belt team. The one hole worth watching is under center — Alonza Barnett, last year's Player of the Year, is off to UCF, so JMU has to replace its most important player without missing a beat. For Coastal, simply making this a competitive football game would be a real marker of progress under Beard — a sign the Chanticleers have climbed out of the hole Beck left behind rather than fallen further into it.

Markets haven't opened on this one yet given how far out it is, but the storyline writes itself either way: a proven, playoff-tested program defending its turf against a first-year coach trying to salvage a rivalry that's currently 59-10 embarrassing.
