James Madison closed out the 2025 regular season by hanging 59 points on Coastal Carolina — a beatdown so ugly it cost Tim Beck his job. Four months out from the rematch, Coastal has a new coach trying to make sure that number never happens again.

There's no getting around the history here. JMU's 59-10 win over Coastal Carolina last November was the final straw for Tim Beck, who got fired days later after going 20-18 across three seasons in Conway. The Dukes, meanwhile, kept rolling — a Sun Belt title, a Sun Belt Player of the Year quarterback, and a trip to the College Football Playoff first round. This Friday night matchup on November 27 closes the book on the first chapter of the Ryan Beard era, and JMU is the measuring stick whether Coastal likes it or not.

James Madison enters 2026 as the favorite to repeat as East Division champs, with eight Dukes landing on Phil Steele's preseason All-Sun Belt team. The one hole worth watching is under center — Alonza Barnett, last year's Player of the Year, is off to UCF, so JMU has to replace its most important player without missing a beat. Coastal Carolina, on the other hand, is starting over almost everywhere. Ryan Beard, 36, arrives from Missouri State — where he went 19-16 in three seasons and capped it with a bowl trip — tasked with rebuilding a program that finished 6-6 and got run off the field by the team it plays this Friday.

Beard's rebuild starts with a brutal test: Coastal opens 2026 on the road against West Virginia before easing in against Fordham, then dives into Sun Belt play in October. By the time this one rolls around in late November, both teams will have a full conference slate behind them, and JMU should have a much clearer read on whoever wins the post-Barnett quarterback job. The margin last year was as lopsided as it gets in this league — a 49-point spread between two Sun Belt East foes — and that's the baseline Beard has to climb out from under.

JMU's path back to Conway for this one comes wrapped in stakes: another East crown is very much in play, and blowing out the team that just fired its coach over you is exactly the kind of thing that keeps a target on JMU's back all season. For Coastal, simply making this a competitive football game would be a real marker of progress under Beard — a sign the Chanticleers have climbed out of the hole Beck left behind rather than fallen further into it.

Markets haven't opened on this one yet given how far out it is, but the storyline writes itself either way: a proven, playoff-tested program defending its turf against a first-year coach trying to salvage a rivalry that's currently 59-10 embarrassing. Circle it now — by late November, we'll know a lot more about whether Beard has actually changed anything in Conway.
