The schedule might matter more than the depth chart. UCF had the week off after Oklahoma State, so it gets 2 weeks to get healthy and draw something up for Bachmeier. BYU gets a normal week after the biggest win of its season so far, plus a flight across the country to Florida. Plenty of top-10 teams have had a flat Saturday after beating a top-3 team. Whether BYU does is the most interesting question in this game.
BYU's 5-0 is built on defense more than flash. Nobody has scored more than 24 on the Cougars, and Iowa State and TCU managed 10 each. TCU is the useful common opponent here. BYU won 17-10 in Fort Worth, and UCF beat the Horned Frogs 21-13 at home. Those 2 results are closer than the rankings suggest. The bigger gap is in what UCF has done since. The Knights have now lost 2 straight and gave up 27 to Houston and 42 to Oklahoma State. A BYU offense that can't lean on a healthy running back needs to keep that run going.
The forecast won't decide anything: 76 degrees, partly cloudy, about 12 mph of wind and an 11% chance of rain. So it comes down to whether Bachmeier can keep making up for a banged-up backfield, and whether UCF's defense can finally get through a second half without falling apart. If Barnett is cleared, Scott Frost gets a choice between his No. 1 quarterback and the backup who just threw 4 touchdowns. Watch that news this week.
BYU is unbeaten, ranked and coming off a signature win. UCF is .500 and still has plenty to play for at home. If the Cougars come out as sharp as they did against Notre Dame, this probably isn't close. If they come out flat, the Bounce House is a tough place to find their legs.
