Miami is one drive removed from a national title and loaded up at quarterback anyway. Boston College is starting from scratch after the worst season of the O'Brien era.

The quarterback gap here is enormous. Darian Mensah arrives in Coral Gables off a Duke career that produced 56 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions over two seasons, and oddsmakers already have him in the Heisman conversation before he's thrown a pass for the Canes. Boston College, meanwhile, is replacing Dylan Lonergan (now at Rutgers) with a completely rebuilt room — Mason McKenzie, Grayson Wilson and true freshman Femi Babalola all in the mix, none of them proven at this level.

O'Brien got retained despite a 2-10, 1-7 ACC finish in 2025, and the front office backed that decision by remaking the roster around him. New tackles Reggie Jackson and Trevon Humphrey and guard Kristian Phillips were brought in to fix a line that helped produce the second-worst rushing attack in the conference, and transfers Evan Dickens and Nolan Ray give the Eagles fresh legs in the backfield. Miami's answer to that investment is simply bringing back what already worked: Cooper Barkate followed Mensah over from Duke, and explosive playmakers Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher Jr. are both back after 1,000-plus-yard seasons. It's a roster built to win now, not rebuild.

Whatever line the market lands on by kickoff, it's going to reflect a program with national title-game scar tissue hosting one that's still finding its footing. Cristobal's group fell to Indiana 27-21 in the CFP championship last season and has talked openly about using that heartbreak as motivation; a home date against a rebuilding ACC bottom-feeder in late November is exactly the kind of game a team with bigger goals is supposed to handle without much drama.

For BC, this is about reps more than results. A patchwork offensive line and a quarterback competition that's still sorting itself out need game snaps against real competition, and there's no tougher final exam than a Miami defense that helped carry the Canes to 13 wins a year ago. O'Brien has never been shy about grinding out development seasons, and this trip to Hard Rock Stadium doubles as a look at whether the roster investment is paying off before it matters more in 2027.

For Miami, the stakes are bigger. A team that set a school wins record and played three straight postseason underdog roles has every incentive to keep the machine rolling into whatever November brings for playoff seeding. Kickoff is set for 11:00 PM local on Friday, November 27, closing out Thanksgiving weekend with about as lopsided a résumé matchup as the ACC schedule offers this year.
