TLDR: Boise State has won 5 straight in its first Pac-12 season. Washington State has lost 4 straight and is 1-6. Saturday in Pullman, the Cougars get the hottest team on their schedule, a week after Oregon State put 48 on them.

Boise State, 5-1 and unbeaten in its first Pac-12 season, visits a 1-6 Washington State team that has lost 4 straight in Kirby Moore's 1st year. Against the same 2 opponents, Fresno State and Utah State, the Broncos won both and the Cougars lost both. Washington State is also missing 2 pass catchers for this game. The open questions are whether Boise's defense keeps letting opponents hang around, and whether a Cougars offense that scored 30 at Oregon State can keep up with Dylan Riley.

Boise State Broncos
  • Dylan Riley: 150 rushing yards and 2 TDs at Fresno
  • 32-plus points in each of the last 5 games
  • Beat Fresno and Utah State, both of whom beat WSU
  • Gave up 24 to FCS South Dakota at home
  • Fresno State put up 31 on the defense
  • Road trip to a 1-6 team is a letdown spot
Washington State Cougars
  • Lost to Utah State by just 1
  • Scored 30 at Oregon State
  • Gave up 48 at Oregon State last time out
  • Held to 6 at home by Fresno State
  • WR Freeman (ACL) and TE Cedarland both out

Start with the backfield, because that is where Boise State has been winning. Dylan Riley ran for 150 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries at Fresno State and added a 44-yard catch-and-run score in the 38-31 win. Spencer Danielson's 3rd Boise team has scored at least 32 in each of its last 5 games. Washington State needs a defense that can make a team throw on early downs, and through 7 games it hasn't shown it has one.

On the other side, Kirby Moore is in year 1 in Pullman. He came from Missouri's offensive coordinator job and rebuilt most of the roster through the transfer portal. UC Davis transfer Caden Pinnick has been the quarterback. He's playing without 2 pass catchers: WR T. Freeman tore his ACL and is done for the season, and TE H. Cedarland has been out since August with a leg injury. There's no posted line on this one yet, and nobody is waiting for one to know who the favorite is.

The best way to size this game up is the opponents both teams have already played. Fresno State came to Martin Stadium and held Washington State to 6 points in a 26-6 win. Boise State went to Fresno and scored 38. Utah State beat the Cougars 16-17 in Logan, and Boise beat the Aggies at home by 19. The 2 teams played the same 2 opponents and got very different results.

To be fair to Washington State, the Cougars haven't been easy to beat every week. The Utah State loss was a 1-point game, and they put up 30 at Oregon State even while giving up 48. The offense can score in streaks. The problem is a defense that gives up points faster than the offense can get them back, and Boise State's running game is the worst possible matchup for that.

Boise State isn't spotless either. South Dakota, an FCS team, scored 24 on the Broncos in Boise, and Fresno State got to 31. This defense has let teams hang around, and a road trip into a loud Pullman crowd on a Saturday is exactly the kind of game a 5-1 team can sleepwalk through. The forecast is friendly for late October on the Palouse: 62 degrees, mostly sunny, almost no wind. Weather won't slow either offense down.
