Matt Rempe fights Jeff Viel in return to Rangers lineup

TLDR: Back in the Rangers lineup for Jaroslav Chmelař, Matt Rempe dropped the gloves with Jeff Viel against the Lightning, his first fight since breaking his left thumb against Ryan Reaves almost a year ago.
The swap showed up at morning skate at Madison Square Garden, with Chmelař skating as an extra and Rempe slotted back on the 4th line.
Rempe needed a night like this. The 6-foot-9 forward had been a scratch in every game but 1 this season. That one was opening night against Boston, where he played 9:49 and threw 6 hits. Chmelař had kept the spot since then, averaging just over 8 minutes a night with 0 points in 6 games. So the Rangers went back to the big guy against Tampa Bay, and it didn't take long for him to remind everybody why he's on the roster.
It started with Rempe running D'Astous into the boards. Viel came over to answer for his teammate, and he got some early shots in before Rempe took over.
From the Tampa side, the read was that Viel opened with his left and landed a few early, but this wasn't some random target. It was a 6-foot-9 heavyweight, and Viel ate a couple of right hands for his trouble. Credit to Viel for showing up for D'Astous. That's still not a matchup most guys are signing up for.
The thumb is the real backstory here. On October 23, 2025, Rempe fought Ryan Reaves, then with the Sharks, and broke his left thumb in multiple places when it got tangled in Reaves' jersey while he kept firing left jabs. He needed surgery and missed 24 straight games. He said he didn't even know it was broken until he looked down at it in the penalty box. When he came back, he made it clear the injury wasn't going to stop him from fighting. Tuesday was the first time he actually did it.
Then came the part Rangers fans will be watching. Once the fight ended, Rempe didn't go to the box and hang around. He went straight down the tunnel.
There was no word right away on why he left, and it's way too early to connect it to the thumb or anything else. Going to the room after a fight can just mean getting stitched up or having the hands looked at. The good news is that Rempe got his first scrap in almost a year out of the way, and he won it pretty clearly. The bad news is that a guy who's spent most of October in the press box can't really afford another stint on the shelf. What happens next is the big question: whether he's back for the next shift, and whether he keeps Chmelař's spot after this one.
