Jayden Daniels Sends LSU Cease-And-Desist Over No. 5 Jersey

The 2023 Heisman winner is legally barring LSU from using his name, image and likeness after the Tigers handed his old No. 5 to cornerback DJ Pickett.

This is what a jersey number dispute looks like when it gets lawyers involved. Jayden Daniels' camp sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter on Aug. 5, telling the school it's no longer allowed to use his name, image or likeness. The trigger: LSU letting sophomore corner DJ Pickett wear No. 5, the number Daniels wore when he won the Heisman in Baton Rouge in 2023.

Here's the thing — Daniels' number was never actually retired. LSU just hadn't handed it out since he left for the NFL. That's exactly why this feels so messy: there's no rule being broken, just an unspoken understanding that got broken instead. Reportedly, Daniels' rep says the family felt "profoundly disrespected," believing the number would stay a quiet piece of his legacy in Baton Rouge whether or not it was officially hung in the rafters.

LSU's side isn't hiding from it either. Lane Kiffin has been straightforward that Pickett was promised No. 5 back when he signed with the Tigers in December 2024, and that a promise is a promise. Pickett wore No. 3 as a freshman and made freshman All-American doing it — the school reportedly held off handing him No. 5 while Daniels was still on campus, then made good on the old promise once he left.

Then it escalated. Per CFB Kings, Daniels' representatives reportedly asked LSU to hand over the school's own copy of the 2023 Heisman Trophy — every winner and their school each keep a replica — specifically so LSU can't display it anymore. That's not a jersey-number gripe anymore. That's someone trying to erase a trophy case.

Pickett, for his part, has had to answer for a decision that isn't really his to make — he just wanted the number he was told he'd get.

Daniels himself has tried to lower the temperature publicly, telling reporters he hopes the situation "gets done privately" between his team and the school.

Jayden Daniels: "Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately."

Whether it stays private is the real question now. Daniels is entering his second NFL season off a Rookie of the Year campaign in Washington, and LSU still has an entire season of marketing, merchandise and highlight packages built around a Heisman run it apparently can't legally reference anymore. Somebody's going to blink — or this drags into an actual legal fight over a jersey that was already retired in everything but paperwork.
